Blog: How it all Started

One minute I am listening to the radio to position myself to assist in a high-speed chase, then in the blink of an eye, I am on Zoom working with a team of designers to create an app, Backpack, to improve parent-teacher conferences. Time flies when you enjoy what you do!

Transitioning from a career in law enforcement to a UX/UI designer through photography as a hobby can be an exciting and transformative journey. Law enforcement equips individuals with a unique set of skills and experiences that can be valuable in the design field. As a officer, I honed my ability to analyze complex situations, think critically, and communicate effectively—traits that are highly sought after in UX/UI design.

As a UX/UI designer, I leverage my understanding of human behavior and empathy gained from working in law enforcement. I believe these skills are essential for creating intuitive user interfaces and designing experiences that meet the needs and expectations of diverse users. Additionally, my experience in law enforcement helps me anticipate potential challenges or risks in design projects, allowing me to create solutions that prioritize safety, security, and accessibility.

As an autodidact photographer with 7 likes (lol), my hobby in photography further enhanced my transition into the design field. It offered a creative outlet and an opportunity to develop a keen eye for aesthetics, composition, and storytelling. I apply my photography skills to capture and understand visual elements, which can greatly inform my approach to visual design in UX/UI. Photography also helped me to better comprehend the power of visual communication and the impact it has on user engagement and satisfaction.

By combining skills from law enforcement, an understanding of human behavior, and my passion for photography, I bring a unique perspective to UX/UI design. I do very well at conducting user research, gathering insights, and identifying patterns and trends that inform design decisions. Moreover, my diverse background can contribute to the development of inclusive and user-centered design solutions that cater to a wide range of individuals, ensuring equitable experiences for all.
